What was your personal career highlight?
Honestly, it would probably be note taking for sessions of the 6th Committee of the General Assembly. Being able to engage with delegations, observe the varying perspectives of states with regards to topics such as measures eliminating international terrorism and crimes against humanity, and seeing international law making in action has been invaluable.
What changes would you like to see in the industry to make it more inclusive and welcoming to underrepresented groups?
I have been incredibly privileged to be in the most multicultural institution in the world. I would however like to see more young people be employed in full-time positions, rather than internship roles.
Have you ever worked in any other professions other than law? What advice do you have for non-law candidates wanting to break into law?
I have worked in hospitality from my mid-teens prior to breaking into law. Other than that, I have previously interned at a human rights NGO, mostly writing legal analysis on events across Europe with varying human rights implications. For those not already in law, I would advise that you first start by reading cases. Not necessarily in full, even summaries can be enough to begin to understand rationale, lines of argumentation, what kind of issues are hot in the legal industry right now. Find a field that resonates with you, even if it is not the area you initially want to work in. Fall in love with law first.
